| Rainbow Beach |
It has been two weeks now since I got back from one of the most beautiful islands in the world- Fraser Island. Magali, Silvia, Gaeton and I drove there on Saturday morning. (I met the girls a week earlier through an au pair page on Facebook.) It was a 3 hour drive from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach.
Rainbow Beach is the main point from where the ferries leave for Fraser Island. As we got there on Saturday, we had the whole day to explore the beautiful beach with its 72 colors of sand and over 15km of shore. I of course went swimming as well, the water was so nice and warm(too cold for the French and Italian) and the waves were awesome! Our hotel was great as well, it was called Dingos. There were lot of European backpackers there. In the evening we went to the Carlo Sand Dune to watch the sunset. I also grabbed a board from the hotel and did some sand-surfing at the dune. It was so much fun!
Our tour to Fraser Island started at 7:45am on Sunday. The coolest tour guide Cameron picked us up form the hotel. Our tour bus was full of retired old European and Canadian couples- they were all just adorable. Once we got to the island we had a schedule to hold on to, so our firs stop was Lake McKenzie (a place I had been waiting for to go for a long time now). It is part of World Heritage and has been voted to be one of the best beaches/places to go before you die by many travel books and magazines. Once we got there, I was little disappointed that the water wasn't as turquoise blue as I had expected due to the rain in the morning. Nevertheless, the water was crystal clear and irresistible for a swim. The sand there was white as snow and perfect for a little beauty procedure and scrubbing :)
Our next stop was one of the four rain forests they have on the island. It was the tropical one with lushy plants I had never seen before, a real bright green jungle all around us. Other places we visited were the famous Maheno shipwreck and the beautiful Eli Creek. I also took the opportunity to take a private plan for 15 min that flew above the island. Within these 15 min I was able to see the sand dunes, many lakes(including the famous Butterfly Lake), Maheno shipwreck from above and the blue ocean to spot some whales( which we unfortunately didn't). Needless to mention that I got some pretty great photos from above :)
Even though I am and was really on a budget, I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to explore a bit of the famous coast of Queensland, a place to definitely come back to one day. The only great way to end this blog is with some pictures.
